Women’s Fellowship Concert
Posted Thursday 3 March 2011 ~ 12:16pm
On 24th February members of the Women’s Fellowship were treated to a delightful afternoon’s entertainment by eleven pupils from St Mary’s School, and their teacher Miss McRae.
Pupils were aged between seven and thirteen years, and without exception, all were confident and enthusiastic in their performances.
The two children who opened the concert, each one singing a solo, were performing in public for the first time. They were excellent and showed no sign of ‘first night nerves’.
We enjoyed various pieces on the piano, including ‘Top Cat’ which brought back many memories of the cartoon character of the 1960s, well before the parents of the children would even be born. There was a tuneful Allegro played on the flute, and later the same piece played by a different pupil on the violin.
The audience heard Grieg’s ‘Norwegian Air’ and a clarinet study. These were both by a most talented young boy who will be leaving the school this year, to take up a place at Wells Cathedral School.
The amusing monologue from ‘The Worst Witch’, was shared between two pupils, both are interested in drama, who recently had each performed it at their school entrance exam. They very ably acted out the passage with considerable expression and intonation.
One then sang ‘Wouldn’t it be loverly’ from My Fair Lady, and the other performed ‘Miss Adelaide’s Lament’ from Guys and Dolls.
The school show next month will be Frank Loesser’s Guys and Dolls, and we enjoyed two other numbers ‘If I were a bell’ and also the duet between Sky Masterton and Miss Sarah Brown - ‘I’ve never been in love before’.
Members of the Women’s Fellowship were quite enthralled by the high standard these young people had reached. They are a credit to their school and in particular their music teacher Miss McRae, who accompanied them on the piano when necessary.
As usual the afternoon was rounded off with afternoon tea provided by Rose and Sylvia.
