Sermon discussion

Jesus and the rich young man
There was an interesting meeting on Wednesday in the public bar of the King’s Arms. We talked with Michael Kitchener about his sermon last Sunday. Conversation ranged across many subjects: church history and the early decisions about creeds and the canon of scripture and various heresies and disputes being addressed; about language and the power of words to make things happen and to reveal the truth; and about the use of speech and communication today including how we respond to emails and text messages.
I think we agreed that how we hear things in a sermon, things about ourselves and the world around us can be fairly subjective – we sometimes feel spoken to directly in a way that the preacher doesn’t know or never intended – and is often an agent for change in our thinking and behaviour.
We spent a short time looking at the scriptures for next Sunday and gave Maurice some hints for his sermon then. Let’s see what he makes of it.
It was an interesting and convivial meeting, the kind of conversation that takes place over a drink when we have something to say and are interested in the responses of people we trust to engage with things that matter to us.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 18th November at 10 am in Marmion’s, [a change from formerly advertised] when the sermon from the previous Sunday will be discussed. The texts are:
Daniel 12: 1-3
Hebrews 10: 11-25
Mark 13: 1-8
