‘We went and told the sexton and the sexton tolled the bell’
Rector’s Warden Brian Magowan got in a fankle last week. Tolling the bell (most beautifully to begin with) at a funeral service, Brian - not one of our usual bell ringers - pulled just a bit too hard.
The bell has recently been re-housed and perhaps the bell is a bit too easy to get moving. Brian managed to swing it right round on its axis and got it jammed. “He will have to learn the ropes” quipped one of the old hands - and other bell-ringing puns followed: ‘always thought he was a big noise’; ‘vestry members always a bit heavy handed’; ‘he will have to be tolled off’ etc
Unrepentant, Magowan offered to climb up and fix it, but we thought he had done enough damage for one week.
