Ladies at tea after Liz's talk
Liz Turner, a member of Holy Trinity gave a most interesting talk on what it means to be a Tertiary Franciscan, and how it impacts on her life and work in the B.G.H. caring for stroke patients.
She recounted the life of Saint Francis. This was much fuller than the standard images of him holding his hand out to the birds leads one to believe.
The ‘First Order of the Society of Saint Francis’ consists of men and women living in a community with vows of poverty obedience and celibacy.
The ‘Second Order of the Society of Saint Francis’ - Poor Clares is made up of women who live an enclosed life of contemplative prayer and work.
The ‘Third Order of the Society of Saint Francis’ is composed of both men and women, who can be either ordained or lay members.
Their aim is to follow the example of Saint Francis, in leading a simple life of self-denial, pledged to the service of others and with respect for all life. It is a lifelong committment.
Literature about the Society of Saint Francis was available at the end of Liz’s address.
