Did you know that the first man in the bible is a Scotsman?
- King James.
To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James bible we held an exhibition. Members of the church brought the exhibits: family bibles with details about ancestors, old bibles; bibles that had been given on a special occasion; bibles that had been helpful (we allowed other versions than the Authorised) and one Elizabethan bible and prayer book asking for prayers for ‘her gracious majesty’
There was a lot that was interesting - the man whose grandfather had got off the land (being a tenant farmer) and found a more prosperous living in the then developing railways and the three generations of his descendants who still are members at Holy Trinity; the great grandfather who made a note in the margin beside his grandmother’s name -“she taught me how to shoot”; foreign bibles that had been used by missionaries; picture bibles with vivid impressions of heros from the Hebrew Scriptures; tiny print and huge monastic parchments .. it was all here.
Despite the rain there was quite a lot of interest and we served teas outside in a marquee. Visitors were invited to take a bible quiz or, if they had a name that was in the bible, to sign a cloth that was stitched into an altar cloth.
We had a great time - learning the important part the English translations have played in shaping our faith and culture.
