Certificate in Christian Studies

The Diocese of Edinburgh is now offering a course of lay theological education which derives from York St John’s University (YSJ). Following a pilot in the Edinburgh, another course will begin in the Borders in March 2010. (Venues still to be decided.) Participants meet in small groups for 10 hours of discussion time per module and sessions are facilitated by people with theological and adult education experience. As well as the 10 hours of group work, participation on the course requires the setting aside of time for individual reading in preparation for these sessions.

The first module we study is called Using the Bible: Studying the Text, written by Robert Evans, lecturer in Biblical Studies at Chester University. Its aim is to enable exploration of traditional and contemporary ways of reading biblical texts using the tools of biblical scholarship. Every participant will receive a photocopy of the core text plus a workbook.

Cost of the course is £50 per module to cover materials.

Proposed dates are 6, 27 March, 17 April, 1, 22 May and 12 June. It is hoped to run two parallel sessions to limit distances to be travelled.
